SEATTLE (AP) — Fights, vandalism and arrests marked the release of Nike's new Air Jordan basketball shoes as a shopping rush on stores across the country led to unrest that nearly turned into rioting. The outbursts of chaos stretched from Washington state to Georgia as shoppers — often waiting for hours in lines — converged on stores Friday in pursuit of the shoes, a retro model of one of the most popular Air Jordans ever made. In suburban Seattle, police used pepper spray on about 20 customers who started fighting at the Westfield Southcenter mall. The crowd started gathering at four stores in the mall around midnight and had grown to more than 1,000 people by 4 a.m., when the stores opened, Tukwila Officer Mike Murphy said. He said it started as fighting and pushing among people in line and escalated over the next hour. Murphy said no injuries were reported, although some people suffered cuts or scrapes from fights. In Tukwila, Officer Murphy said the crowd was on the verge of a riot and would have gotten even more out of hand if the police hadn't intervened. About 25 officers from Tukwila and surrounding areas responded. "It was not a nice, orderly group of shoppers," Murphy said. "There were a lot of hostile and disorderly people." The Southcenter mall's stores sold out of the Air Jordans, and all but about 50 people got a pair, Murphy said. Shoppers described the scene as chaotic and at times dangerous. Carlisa Williams said she joined the crowd at the Southcenter for the experience and ended up buying two pairs of shoes, one for her and one for her brother. But she said she'll never do anything like it again. "I don't understand why they're so important to people," Williams told KING-TV. "They're just shoes at the end of the day. It's not worth risking your life over." Shoppers broke two doors, and 18-year-old man was arrested for assault after authorities say he punched an officer. STATE COLLEGE, Pa.—A day after the former Penn State assistant football coach who is charged with sexual abuse of boys declared his innocence in a television interview, an email surfaced from a key witness against him, saying he stopped an alleged attack in the team's showers. Mike McQueary, the graduate assistant who a grand jury report said saw Jerry Sandusky allegedly sodomizing a boy in the locker room, said he stopped the act and went to police. That added confusion to the already emotionally raw situation that has enveloped Penn State University and resulted in the firing of coach Joe Paterno, the ousting of president Graham Spanier and charges of perjury against the athletic director and a former senior vice president.The Nov. 8 email from McQueary to a friend, made available to The Associated Press, said: "I did stop it, not physically ... but made sure it was stopped when I left that locker room ... I did have discussions with police and with the official at the university in charge of police .... no one can imagine my thoughts or wants to be in my shoes for those 30-45 seconds ... trust me." McQueary is a former player and current assistant coach who was placed on indefinite paid leave last week after school officials said he had received threats. Emails sent to him seeking comment were not immediately returned. He told the friend that he felt he was "getting hammered for handling this the right way ... or what I thought at the time was right ... I had to make tough impacting quick decisions." The grand jury report issued Nov. 5, the day Sandusky was charged with 40 criminal counts for alleged sexual abuse against eight boys over 15 years, goes into considerable detail about the March 2002 incident. McQueary was putting sneakers into his locker late on a Friday night when, the jury said, he saw Sandusky having sex with a young boy. He left, "distraught," and contacted his father and then head coach Joe Paterno, jurors said. McQueary later met with athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz to describe what he had seen, the grand jury said. LOS ANGELES, SEPTEMBER 27, 2011- There is no more iconic piece of movie memorabilia than the Ruby Red Slippers from The Wizard of Oz and the pair up for auction are not only screen used but the pair used when Dorothy clicks her heels together three times to return home to Kansas. You certainly won't be in Kansas anymore when the famed pair of slippers is on the auction block during Profiles in History's three day "Icons of Hollywood" auction which takes place December 15, 16 & 17 at a location which will be released in the following weeks. Profiles in History, run by Joe Maddalena, is the famed auction house that represented the Debbie Reynolds Collection this summer, destroying Guinness World Records with $23,000,000 in sales results. It's been said by Rhys Thomas in his book The Ruby Slippers of Oz, "They were much more than just a piece of Hollywood memorabilia, much more than a valuable piece of industry history. They transcended Hollywood, to the point where they represented the powerful image of innocence to all America." There are four pairs of screen used Ruby Slippers known to have survived the seventy years since the making of The Wizard of Oz. One pair is the center piece of the Icons of American Culture exhibition at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History and is one of the most asked about artifacts at the museum. So viewed are these slippers that the carpet in front of them has had to be replaced numerous times due to the crush of shoes that have brought visitors from all over the world to see their glimmer. Another pair was unfortunately stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and will likely never be recovered. The third pair is in private hands and will not be reaching the market any time soon. The final fourth pair up for auction are marked on the inside lining, "#7 Judy Garland" and the leather soles are painted red on the bottom. The lack of felt, in addition to light, circular scuffs evident on the soles indicate their use in the extra-close-up or "insert" shots when Judy Garland taps her heels together at the film's climax. Their condition is near mint and it is also believed that this "beauty" pair was placed on the protruding feet of the Wicked Witch of the East after she was squashed by Dorothy's house since they exhibit slightly higher heels and the bottoms of the shoes were exposed to the camera. This pair has exhibited at the Smithsonian, while their pair went on loan and was the cornerstone of the Library of Congress exhibition in 2000 entitled, "The Wizard of Oz: an American Fairy Tale," celebrating the centennial of the publication of America's most beloved home-grown fairy tale. They have a presale estimate of $2,000,000-3,000,000 with more information about the auction to be released in the coming weeks. - Julian's

Nan Goldin's raw photographs of what she dubs her "tribe" in the late '70s and early '80s depicted the drugs, partying, and sex of post-punk downtown New York. The body of work, entitled "the Ballad of Sexual Dependency," became a series of slide shows, and eventually a book, serving as a visual diary that illustrated the intimate relationships between friends and lovers, including her own. Sadly, by the '90s, many of her subjects succumbed to overdoses or AIDS. Her images, however, changed the world of photography, kicking off the idea of snapshots as fine art pieces. Stiletto-loving poker pro Beth Shak, 41, regularly cashes in her chips to fuel a pedestrian passion, buying shoes -- and at 1,200 pairs, she has enough to put Carrie Bradshaw to shame. The comely card sharp has three closets filled with enough size-7 designer shoes to make her the envy of footwear-loving ladies everywhere. "It's my one happiness," said Shak, 41, who is single and has a pad on Park Avenue, along with her primary home in Bryn Mawr, Pa. The stylish shoe fiend, who has competed in poker tournaments across the globe, said her collection includes a whopping 700 pairs of Christian Louboutins valued at nearly $500,000. "To me, his shoes are like fine art," the 5-foot-4½-inch poker ace said of Louboutin, whose heels make her 5-foot-10. "It's like wearing a piece of jewelry." Her Louboutin love has even yielded a side benefit: Shak said the Paris-based shoe company now takes special orders from her and tips her off to limited-edition stilettos. "They pretty much just e-mail me pictures, and I get to pick what I want," she crowed. She thinks there's nothing wrong with a guy buying some for his gal. In fact, she encourages it. "Turn over a pair of our shoes, see what size we are, and bring home a pair of shoes," she said. Since going poker pro in 2004, Shak has played in the World Series of Poker and the European Poker Tour, sometimes while wearing her favorite shoes: a custom-made, one-of-a-kind pair of hot-pink Walter Steiger heels, with a spade on the toe, of course. "I have people say, 'Where can you get these?' And I'm like, 'You can't. I have the only pair,' " Shak said. She said a favorite of her male opponents at the poker table is her Louboutin knee-high boots, worn with skinny jeans. Her local shoe-hunting grounds are Christian Louboutin's Horatio Street store and Barneys in Manhattan. "Her style is on the sexy side," said Barneys shoe seller Oscar Lopez, 41. "I don't think I've ever sold her a pair of flats." Shak, who will be featured in the upcoming film documentary "God Save My Shoes," is looking to pair herself with a charity to give away up to 100 pairs of her used designer heels. Elvis Presley’s white buck shoes feature in Beatles exhibit: That the Beatles were fans of Elvis Presley is no secret. John Lennon said, "Before Elvis, there was nothing." Elvis’ famous white buck shoes have now become a new addition to the Beatles Story exhibition. The shoes – worn in the 1957 film, Jailhouse Rock – have been lent to the Albert Dock-based collection by the estate of Presley himself. George Harrison said, "I remember at school there was all that thing about Elvis. When a record came along like ‘Heartbreak Hotel' it was so amazing. We know Elvis is great. Seeing Elvis was like seeing the Messiah arrive." Paul McCartney also told of his love for Elvis. "Every time I felt low, I just put on an Elvis record and I'd feel great, beautiful." So maybe it's not so ironic that the Beatles Story is displaying Elvis' shoes this month. It's the first time the shoes have been displayed outside of Presley's Graceland home.
